Cogliano, Our Draft Day Trading Chip?

IMO it makes perfect sense. His upside is a better Horcoff, however Horcoff is signed to an immovable contract for 5 seasons, and Gagner's offensive upside is higher. Cogs is the one to go of the three.

We could go a couple of different directions.....

#1-Trade him and our 1st rounder to get into the top 5
#2-Trade him straight up for Toronto's pick

Yes Lowe and Burke are about as sociable as 2 drunken sailors from rival countries, but Tambellini could get this done.

Toronto receives a 2nd line center from the area that is coming into his own and who they have been ripped apart for not drafting in the first place, and the Oilers get a 6th or 7th overall pick to try to pluck another really good talent.

Potentially 2 top 10 picks from this years draft could really get this teams future headed in the right direction (of course with a new coach in place).

Perhaps a deal involving Cogliano and Grebeshkov or Gilbert could land us in the top 3 or 4 spots this year. Or the 6th/7th and our pick could do the same. The Oilers need an elite talent going forward, we cannot wait any longer to get it. A new coach, a young star, and an exciting new style of play. That is what it will take to get this team back on track.

In doing so, TambeLowe will have to think outside of the box, trading one of our best young players is probably the only way to get it done. That is of course unless Hemsky demands a trade.

I thought you were smarter than that...

So you want to deal guys who are becoming good NHLers for more prospects. Who in a year or two will be the same. So then you can trade them for more prospects.

BB, if we're going to trade up in this draft, trade way up, not a couple of slots.

And don't trade Cogs. Nilsson, thecaptainethanmoreau, Gilbert, Brule there are a number who I would not be surprised or upset about.

But not Cogs.

Cogliano is and will be a very good player. However unless we are comfortable paying Horcoff $5.5 million to be a 3rd line center, or Cogs moves to the wing (my personal choice), this is the way to go.

Cogs and Gagner will both be RFA's after next year and both will be in line for large pay raises. Tough times are ahead.

As much as I like Cogs, we need an elite young player to build around, we don't have that player.

IMO it's Horc or Cogs, Cogs is cheaper, younger, and faster, but Horc comes with his immovable contract in tow.

It's not the right move, but I wasn't the one that got us in this mess in the first place.

How do you figure that Cogs & Gags are going to be in line for huge raises?
Not with career highs of under 20 goals and 50 points for each of them.

Furthermore, if you traded Cogs & Grebs/Gilbert & our 1st rounder I sure hope you could get the #1 overall pick. Unless you get Hedman or Tavares it makes zero sense to trade guys that are contributing now for a guy whose a couple years away (Cowen, Kane, Paarjavi).

Next year both should be ready to break out as it is their 3rd year in the league. IMO 55-70 points for Gagner and 50-60 points for Cogs is possible if the two of them have productive offseason's and are under a new coaching philosophy.

I hope this isn't being influenced by Don Cherry's man-crush on Cogliano. He still berates the Leafs for not having drafted him in the first place...

elpol-I'm thinking of the Oilers, not Don Cherry's welfare. Horcoff's contract and Gagner's emergence means that Cogs moves to the wing or he's outta here. Unless of course we can move Horc if he has a much better year next season. Actually IIRC he has a no movement clause for his first 3 years of his extension.
